Sophie Aston’s black Labrador was left needing lifesaving surgery after she ended up with a five-inch wound on her neck.

The vet who treated her said the injury was consistent with her being slashed with a knife and that significant force must have been used to cause such a deep wound.

Sophie, from Crawley, West Sussex, was playing with her dog, Mia, in the park when she heard a loud yelp.

I was just so shocked, we were just minding our own business and we heard this awful shriek from Mia – and when she came back she had this huge wound.

My initial thought was that I needed to take her straight to the vet – but I also wondered how it could have happened.

We do get a lot of injuries with cuts, but this was definitely one of the bad ones.

The cut was about four or five inches deep and required a lot of work – including three layers of stitching.

I wouldn’t want to speculate, but there must have been some force used to sustain an injury like that.

The faithful dog recovered quickly and his now back at her owner’s side.

I have this bond with Mia and have such a strong feeling towards her as my companion.

I was so devastated after the ordeal, I could have lost her.

But thankfully I didn’t. We were so lucky to have the support of David Clare and he is a credit to his profession.

It was a horrible ordeal and I am so glad that Mia is back by my side – I really just want to know what happened to her.

Crawley Borough Council sent out officers to find out to see whether the injury could have been caused by wire or some other sharp object in the park.

A spokesman for the council said:

Officers at the park were told about the incident and two senior supervisors thoroughly searched the area soon after.

Nothing obvious was found which was thought likely to cause the injury.

Sophie is warning other dog owners to be vigilant and if Mia’s injury was caused by a knife she is desperate for the attacker to be caught before they strike again.

A spokesman for Sussex Police confirmed they are investigating the incident and are keen to hear from any witnesses.

We received a call from a member of the public reporting that a dog belonging to their family had sustained a slash wound across its back whilst in Goffs Park.

There has been no information so far as to whether any person was responsible.

If anyone does have information as to how this happened they can contact Sussex Police on 101.

I am a disabled woman who through no fault of my own has wheels under my ass. I rely on the decency and common sense of local, state and federal goverments, as well as the retail community to abide by the disabled access laws and provide adequate ramps, disabled toilets, and not use them as store rooms or broom closets. This blog exists to find the offenders and out them, inform them, and report them if necessary and shame them into doing the right thing when all else fails.
