Service dogs for the disabled have the same rules as guide dogs for the blind DON’T TOUCH

One of the constant problems Zeus and I deal with on a regular basis is opinionated citizens who get pissed with us when we politely tell them “Please don’t touch the dog he’s working”
I wrote a comedy style piece previously that was slanted as if Zeus was explaining why he can’t be patted

There is not a day goes by that someone on the subway won’t walk down the carriage to pat him and totally ignore me when I ask them to stop, then there is the violent threatening loony tunes who scream “everyone knows if you bring the dog in public were allowed to pat it”
The worst offenders are those who should know better nurses, doctors, cops and firemen all people who one would think should know better.
Recently while admitted to the new york hospital flushing with a seriously injured leg no less than three doctors and 4 nurses walked up and patted him actual patients had to tell them”that’s a service dog you’re meant to leave it alone”

To explain it as basically as I can, Zeus in one of his duties is a seizure alert dog, now the way that works is he senses seizures just before they happen so if you are holding his collar tickling his chin shouting “WHO’S CUTE BOY THEN” he can’t do that job and I’m left flailing around in public on the ground without any aid or assistance!

To take this to the lowest common denominator, if you can’t understand the medical need to leave him alone then undertand this he is a 60lb Belgian malinois a military breed Now he’s not vicous and as a service dog he cannot be attacked trained but he is trained to defend me if I am in eminent danger and a total stranger running up yelling “Oh puppy” which by the way all the dog hears is screaming is to him eminent danger.

By the way it was a belgian malinois code named Geronimo that was on the seal tem six mission that captured osama binladen he was put in the door firt to take out the guards and did so efficiently.
Parents this summer when the toddlers are at the beach or the park don’t let and for gods sake don’t encourage them to run up to strange dogs! Some service dogs are fake and they will bite, ask the handler and hold their hand and calm them down and a smart move is always pat behind the head?
With all this said also please if you have a phobia of dogs don’t pass it on, a service dog is a great chance to teach your children what a great help to humans dogs can be educational moments like this should never be wasted.
So in closing please, a service dog to me is the same as a Guide dogs for the vision impaired, an epi pen for the dangerously allergic, or a puffer for the asthmatic without his ability do his job uninterrupted my life is endangered don’t be the person who causes that to happen obey the rules. If you see the words service dog on a vest keep walking and we’ll keep breathing.

I am a disabled woman who through no fault of my own has wheels under my ass. I rely on the decency and common sense of local, state and federal goverments, as well as the retail community to abide by the disabled access laws and provide adequate ramps, disabled toilets, and not use them as store rooms or broom closets. This blog exists to find the offenders and out them, inform them, and report them if necessary and shame them into doing the right thing when all else fails.
