The sad thing about the title to this story was it wasn’t said by an abelist, a humanus erectus, no that I would expect from the years I have dealt with socially taught ignorance to the rights and needs of the dis and otherwise abled this was spoken by one of us ,a member of the tribe someone with wheels under their ass???
There is it seems an element within the family that have been brainwashed by their family their medicos, the vox populi, that theirs is a lot to Be accepted quietly and humbly. They have drunk the Kool-aid that they should learn crochet, and take the few shekels the powers that be throw their way and live a life less than?
WE THE PEOPLE ? It is carved on national monuments, it is the prefix the founding fathers considered the only one appropriate to completely describe the inclusiveness of our rights as those who live in this land.
Before the IED went off ,before the drunk driver crossed three lanes, before the doctor said the C word and before you were born with anyone of thousands of diagnosis that put those wheels under your ass you had dreams, your parents had dreams you had a degree or five a career you paid taxes. The government still wants those taxes, and when you ask them why they reel of diatribe such as “SIDEWALKS , ROADS, PUBLIC TRANSPORT ,PUBLIC BUILDINGS. Well here’s the rub, in more than 75% of the cities in this great nation the sidewalks, the roads and the subways and buses and the public buildings we the people of the tribe with wheels under our ass cannot get in!
WE THE PEOPLE STILL PAID FOR THOSE AMENITIES but they are now for all intent and purpose branded
DISABLED ACCESS DENIED
I am a person with many skills that can earn me a good living, in 2008 I had a job on wall st translating for a company that did those annoying aerial banners that fly over beaches during summer. We had many international clients so it was lucrative. If I could get there it was well paid but all commission, Well to get there I had to change from the 7 train to the e train at 74th st, to do so you have to use three separate elevators in the one station that carry you over 100 ft down. Well over three months the elevators were broken so many times that I either was late, or couldn’t come at all so many times that I was fired and when I did get there the building owned by the federal government had no ramp access but it was paid for by WE THE PEOPLE.
I have lost many jobs or not got them at all because there was no access to the location, there 468 subway stations in the New york subway system but only 65 elevators at 30 stations.
You see the people that brainwashed those who accept complacency, those who accept being put in the corner to watch general hospital and be wheeled out onto the porch occasionally to wave at upright people would rather you not be seen, rather you not be heard then you cost the world less.
Former mayor bloomberg, he of the atrocious Spanish once when asked why he didn’t choose the wheelchair accessible cab for the new design and why he didn’t fix Manhattans sidewalks for the disabled stated
“IT IS NOT NOW, NOR HAS IT EVER BEEN THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THIS OR ANY OTHER ADMNISTRATION TO CARE FOR THE DISABLED THATS THEIR FAMILIES JOB AND AS FOR CABS ,THEY SHOULDNT BE HAILING THEM THEIR A DANGER TO THE PUBLIC OUT IN THEIR CHAIRS”
To those who say don’t rock the boat, I say if it’s not accessible sink the damn thing and build a better one. If one soldier, just one comes home to a country less than perfect for him in his dis or otherwise abled state after heroically serving his nation and coming home a wounded warrior then we as a people have failed him. We have failed those who went into the fire when we wouldn’t, we have failed those who because of their very existence we have the freedoms that we so abuse and take from those really need them.
So if I want to sit quietly and crochet it won’t be at home because the world said I should, it will be in Mia’s amazing crochet boutiques. If I go out on any object it wont be a porch to wave, it will be a cliff edge to repel.
There is nothing wrong with staying home if that’s your choice, but for Christs sake people were disabled not discarded lets stop putting ourselves in a corner there’s enough arrogant upright assholes doing that for us.
IGNORANCE IS THE FUEL OF REBELLION
so let it power you to a life best lived and roll on
