Healthcare Barriers in New York, are you Disabled? Have you Had Your Rights, while a Patient in a New York Hospital Abused?

G’day readers, as you may well know, if you’re a regular reader of my blog, is that my experience, like most dis and otherwise abled citizens, that getting around in a wheelchair or with the aid of any mobility device or because you live with a physical impairment to excuse the pun is not walk in the park. Hospital admittance, although one would think that where could a disabled person be better cared for than a place of healing, alas rates amongst the worse days of our lives because of institutionalised ignorance and departmentalised apathy.

Over the last three years it has been my sad experience to play the roll of lab rat to Beth Israel’s best impression of a second rate hospital giving third rate care and acting like their Florence Nightingale in the process.

Well as it turns out someone was paying attention. A legal group who for the past few years had been investigating and fighting for the government to force large medical groups like Continuum (the owners of Beth Israel and the other medical centers listed below) to get their act together when it comes to competent care for the dis and other wise abled of America. They asked if I would throw my cards into the pot and give evidence in the form of written examples and evidence of my treatment and now they have asked me to spread the word. So please read the request below and please contact these people. My experience so far is that they are caring and will treat you and your evidence with the highest professional regard.

I am a disabled woman who through no fault of my own has wheels under my ass. I rely on the decency and common sense of local, state and federal goverments, as well as the retail community to abide by the disabled access laws and provide adequate ramps, disabled toilets, and not use them as store rooms or broom closets. This blog exists to find the offenders and out them, inform them, and report them if necessary and shame them into doing the right thing when all else fails.
