below are 2 0f 17 Reddit replies on my story about rommney bullying a gay kid during high school, and the replies are growing by the minute. They are split between one third who believe rommney hasn’t changed, to one third like below, who called the victim a coward and one third like the amateur Sigmund Freud below that believe that you don’t develop fully as a human unless you’re bullied as a child?
This person should really stop reading phsycology for dummies, because when they write sounding like they actually know something they give licence to the troglidytes looking for support for their bullying. When these idiots rant bullies believe their providing a social service to child developement! Can you imagine being so self absorbed as to believe that demeaning someones very existence simply because you feel inferior is somehow making them a better human? Wow the republicans should read these rants before outlawing support for birth control, because if these morons mothers had birth control available these social pimples would not be here.
1/First, not world politics.
Secondly, bullying is a social construct and it serves a purpose whether anyone likes it or not. It’s a way for the “group norm” to bring outsiders into line or to keep them from changing the group.
It’s simple social psychology. Whether those purposes are good or bad depends on how extreme the coercion is. Social and peer pressure are real tools, and like any tool, they can be abused.
I don’t think bullying is a big deal. I think it’s a normal part of the psychological development of kids because it’s natural whether we like it or not. I think excessive bullying is a big deal. You won’t eliminate bullying, but you can manage it so it doesn’t become excessive.
Look at this article. It proved the point: all of the bullies learned what they did was wrong. Kids learn by making mistakes, even cruel ones. I have a friend who was a huge bully in high school and he has drank himself into oblivion because of it, long after his victims have known anything about him.
2/ Usually not as big of a coward as the people they pick on that don’t fight back or do anything about it.
