Circles in a Square = Disabled in an Ambulance

Well folks this writer, just a few weeks ago, commented on Queensland Transports Dr. Seuss approach to wheelchair safety on buses and trains.

and it seems instead of doing their numbers and fixing it they continued to color by numbers. Sadly this writer was injured as the result.

This past Thursday on the 11am 610 bus to The Sunshine Plaza on a Suncoast bus the writer was instructed, first to jump the gap because the doors were malfunctioning and therefore the ramp couldn’t be opened.  Then after channelling Tony Hawke, I made it to the blue square with the green edge and hey an extra green line made it complete.  It must be a new security device! Well on the Marooghydore freeway shortly after leaving Wombye the driver cruising at full speed utterred “oh fuck” and swerved left and right and slammed on the brakes. At that point this writer qualified for the international trapeze workers union, became airborne as did her purple racer. Except for her  foot hooking a steel pole she  would have hit the windscreen. i  landed on my back , dislocated my shoulder and in that exact moment I moved  the excruciating pain was my   shoulder popping itself  back in. This all resulted in serious bruising and spasming from skull to butt and my now inability to use my right arm. So no pushing a wheelchair in my immediate future, which means life outside the house stops.

Suncoast buses went in to lock down , admitted nothing and took the approach “your already disabled so how much more damage can be done” and “hey we have accidents on our buses every day.” I’ll tell you what can be done, Suncoast and Queensland Transport, before one more of us is injured, before one of us is killed you can stop spending the advertising money you get from celebrity faces on busses on the next corporate junket or raises for the top execs and follow the rest of the transport worldwide industry into the 21st century. Impliment acceptable safety equipment for all disabled riders on all your vehicles.

A word of warning, pulling the insurance company scare tactic instead of doing the right thing might work on some local whose never left the coast, but after 14 years of surviving New York City and the corporate rat race that 21 million people every day inhabit,  your screaming and ranting isn’t scary. It just makes us homesick for 5th Avenue.

We are a community, we roll together we have a voice! We vote, the people we vote in are the people who make the laws and allocate the right to run bus companies. So start right now doing the right thing or start right now training for a job your qualified for  like asking “do you want fries with that.”

I am a disabled woman who through no fault of my own has wheels under my ass. I rely on the decency and common sense of local, state and federal goverments, as well as the retail community to abide by the disabled access laws and provide adequate ramps, disabled toilets, and not use them as store rooms or broom closets. This blog exists to find the offenders and out them, inform them, and report them if necessary and shame them into doing the right thing when all else fails.
