If you listen to the drug companies and their ads, one is led to believe that the only way to cure everything from an ingrown toe nail to a blocked artery is to take medications made in sterile factories by people in rubber gloves and suits. Don’t get me wrong there are some serious illnesses that effect us that Western Medicine can cure and is sometimes the only way. Repeat.. Sometimes.
One thing you have to remember folks, maybe remember is the wrong word, maybe you just need to know, is that before druggists were called pharmacists their shops were called Apothecaries and before the apothecary there was a women or old man in some village or town who some just plain old called a witch. Whatever title you gave these people, whether you thought they were good, bad, of God or the Devil the thing they really were was amazingly aware of was the effects of mother nature, of which plant could be put with which plant to cure what illness. Some races call them a Shaman. It is only in modern times that we frown upon these practices and call them hocus pocus. Here is the contradiction that borders on hypocracy with modern chemical companies that make the drugs that doctors shove down our throats. They will spend millions or billions telling you the consumer that their product is the only one and that listening to people to tell you to use herbs and spices and special teas are shams and con artists, but then they will spend a few hundred thousand building a room in their plant and corporate headquarters for meditations, massage and reiki to help their execs and workers increase their productivity and ultimately their bottom line.
So lets break this down. They will tell you that Middle Eastern practices or Native American practices or the use of vegetables combined with certain spices or the leafs of certain plants will do nothing for your health and their pill is the only way but they will employ the very people who teach and live by those very practices to come once a week to a lovely room in their headquarters and using those very ideas relax, massage and heal their workers to produce the same pills they say are better than the practices that person uses. Well what they don’t tell you is that when someone first realized that sitting in the back of a apothecary grinding every ingredient by hand for every perscription the doc sent them was no way to profit, it was easier and cheaper to find bright young scientist who could mass produce artifical copies of all the plants, herbs, leafs and spices at 100th of the price and mass produce the pills on a production line like Chevy’s latest car. Here is the problem with artifical copies of mother nature, to paraphrase the amazing Anthony Bourdaine, a pill is not a pill unless it gaurantees at least a dozen side effects ranging from anal leakage to dropping dead.It has been discovered that most of the side effects in modern day pills and capsules are not from the ingredients but the industrial materials used to make the capsule or pill casing. I had a lovely friend in Oz, that needed a heart transplant. Her name was Debbie Taylor. We did what Aussies do, we rallied around, we raised money, we got her the transplant.. she was as good as new. Eight years later she died of cancer. The docs said she got it from the industrial casing from her anti rejection drugs she had to take every day or her life to keep her transplanted heart beating.
So folks, as I write this for you, I’m home with some kind of flu/cold, congested chest, runny nose and all the awful things that happen to the body when one gets a bug and yes I’ve taken a couple of over the counter remedies. To use the Australian venacular, they have done bugger all but on my stove is a pot of soup with Tumeric, mustard seed, fenugreek, organic garlic, onions, lentils, chick peas and every fresh organic vegetable we had in the fridge and in the 20 minutes that its been boiling, the aroma and the steam with all the beautiful smells of the Indian herbs and spices that have been known for 1000’s of years to be curative have made me feel 10x’s better than all the over the counter meds money can buy. So before next time you are told to take something that guarantees nothing more than anal leakage, walk a couple of doors to the fruit and veg shop or your local Indian spice store and your body will say Namaste.
